PUBLIC NEED TO BE EDUCATED ABOUT ACTIVE KINDNESS TO ANIMALS

MELAKA TOWN : Cruelty to animals is on the rise and the public needs to be educated about active kindness to care and love the animals.

Chairman of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Melaka, Irene Seet said that many people are abandoning their pet animals hoping they will be picked up by good Samaritans or left there to die eventually.

She was referring to a case of a dog that was tied by a rope and chain to a railing beside a drain by irresponsible people over a period.

An ex-SPC supervisor, Willie Oh Kim Chuan on receiving a tip from the public, went to the scene and found the dog in a bad condition. He saw maggots on the dog's neck because of the wound inflicted by the ropes.

Willie after asking around found no claims to own the dog. He immediately brought it to the veterinarian who rendered medical aid.

"The neighbors should have informed the SPC or the Veterinary Service Department on seeing any animal being hurt or abused by cruel people," said Willie adding that from the wound, there was indication that the dog has been there for along time and was never released.

It was simply a clear cut care of cruelty and people should be aware that animals have feelings too and need care and love must be given to animals especially if they are reared as pets.

The dog is currently recuperating at the SPC and Irene has appealed to the public to contact the Veterinary Service Department - telephone number 06-2325103 (call for Roslan or Zizi) or even the SPCA at 06-2686261 if they stumbled across any case of cruelty to animals.
